Tourists in Nilgiris are known for their notorious disposal of their plastic items on the ghats sections from Masnagudi to Ooty and the Mettupalayam-Ooty road. Awareness banners have been placed at various locations in these areas on behalf of the district administration and forest department, and yet tourists pay no heed.

Animals eat plastic bags thrown along with food which endangers their lives. The district administration has thus banned bringing plastics into Nilgiris district. Vehicles on the ghat section roads leading to Ooty are being allowed into the district only after rigorous inspection.

However, there is a large pile of plastic litter presently on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam highway. Hence, wildlife enthusiasts have urged for vehicles to be properly inspected.
