In the wee hours of the morning on November 5, the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore received a tip-off that banned tobacco products are being transported from Karnataka to Coimbatore for sale. Based on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, and under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Law and Order and on the advice of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Law and Order (East), a team of police officers from E3 Saravanampatti Police Station, Law and Order, including Sub Inspector Sarath Kumar launched an intensive vehicle check.
A TN 38 CS 9402 Bolero pickup vehicle operating from north to south was allegedly being used to transport banned tobacco products like VI Tobacco products and Vimal Pan Masala. The three youth in the vehicle were identified as Krishnakumar (27), son of Muthuraj residing in 2/58 A, Mathiman Vilai, Kayamozhi, Thiruchendur, Thuthukudi District, Shyamkumar (26), son of Muthuraj, 2/538 Kappini Gounder street, Poosaripalayam, Ganapathi, Coimbatore and Michael (28), son of Siluvai Pichai, 1/49 Gandhi Street, Vilankurichi, Coimbatore who drove the vehicle were apprehended.
The banned tobacco products being transported from Karnataka included six gunny bags that had 20 bundles of V1 tobacco and Rs. 9 lakhs worth of Vimal Pan Masala in 15 gunny bags of 8 bundles each. The police confiscated the tobacco products, Rs. 59,700 in cash and the vehicle.
The Saravanampatti police then booked the trio under crime no 1434/19 U/s 269, 270, 353, 506 and IPC r/w 7 of COTPA Act and produced them at Court.
