Coimbatore: Doctors at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) state that patients suffering a stroke can be cured if brought to the hospital within 4.30 hours of experiencing symptoms of a stroke. On behalf of the hospital administration, a notice on awareness of strokes was distributed at the CMCH premises to patients and their attendants.

Stroke occurs due to blood vessel blockage or bleeding in the brain. It is caused by high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking. Symptoms of stroke include paralysis of hand and leg on one side, deformity of the face, stumbling while walking and speech impairment. Since stroke awareness is not common among the public, an increasing number of stroke victims face fatal consequences. But, doctors in CMCH reiterate that if a patient arrives at the hospital within 4.30 hours after suffering from a stroke, appropriate treatment can be provided to save the patient.
Dr. Asokan, Dean of CMCH opines, "The medical team in 13 hospitals under CMCH will immediately contact the Coimbatore GH and will treat the stroke victims. Patients will benefit from this sophisticated stroke treatment. In the last one year, 17 stroke victims have been administered sophisticated treatment out of which two of them have recovered perfectly and three of them have shown partial improvement. Therefore, the awareness about stroke and modern treatment has to be created."

Dr. Asokan noted that a patient named Karuppusamy (37) had been admitted with stroke symptoms. He immediately underwent a CT scan as well as Rs. 40,000 worth medicines were given under the Chief Minister's Insurance Scheme which helped the patient improve after 10 days.
Therefore, if anyone has any symptoms of stroke, doctors advise the patient to immediately rush to the Government Hospital in Coimbatore. Similarly, doctors can offer special treatments to those who arrive within the specified 4.30 hour period to combat the stroke.

Meanwhile, the CMCH administration has issued a notice to patients and their attendants at the hospital premises that stroke is best treated at CMCH, Coimbatore. The awareness notice included details such as stroke-related symptoms and information on quick treatment in the event of a stroke.
