Coimbatore : The midnight of Sunday was a nightmare for many of the citizens here, as massive lightning and thunderstorms roared across the city lasting for over an hour. The IMD had earlier warned of thunderstorm accompanied with lightning at isolated places in Coimbatore and the Nilgiris district.

As thunderstorm accompanied with lightning struck Coimbatore on Sunday night, power cuts were reported at many places in the city. Those people returning from late night movie shows were stuck in rains until the wee hours till 3 am. No cab or auto service was available, they said.

"Never heard of such deafening thunder sounds for such long periods. And, with power disrupted, the children were also scared to hear the roaring thunder and lightning at the midnight", said a resident of Saibaba Colony.

Several people posted videos of the electrifying lightning on social media. Owing to the rains, the traffic turned chaotic at many places in the city due to waterlogging.

However, no rains were reported in the district of Nilgiris.
