The Nilgiris: Heavy rainfall in the last many days has reportedly destroyed vegetable crops at many areas in the Nilgiris, especially Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri. While the farmers are grieving for the damaged crops, more trouble awaits them as the meteorological department has predicted more rains in the Nilgiris in the upcoming weeks.

While the farmers are grieving for the damaged crops, more trouble awaits them as the meteorological department has predicted more rains in the Nilgiris in the upcoming weeks.
Flooding in all major water channels in Ooty, Coonoor especially near Milithen, VOC Nagar, Indra Nagar, Kurukuthi, Odandurai of Kotagiri Taluk has led to major destruction of the crops.
"Overgrown bushes and wastes dumped in the water channels has obstructed the water flow and hence large quantity of water entered into cultivation lands, thus submerging crops that were due for harvest", lamented a farmer.
One another farmer stated that "Around 35 acres of farm lands in Kavilorai, Sullikoodu and Nedungula has been totally submerged in the water. Likewise, around 70 acres of farm land in Muthorai and Palada has suffered major destruction."
All the farmers have jointly appealed to the District Administration to desilt the water streams in the area and increase their depth. The farmers have also sought compensation for the crops that are submerged in the flood and left them suffer huge losses.
