The Nilgiris : In a bid to temporarily prevent landslides and clear the roads affected by landslides, the highway department have geared up the work of placing sandbags on Ooty and Coonoor roads. Sensitive and sloppy areas which are prone to landslides are monitored to avoid mishaps.

According to reports, more than 30 places including Kunda, Kotagiri, Coonoor and Ooty main road are affected with heavy to moderate landslides. Owing to which the incoming and outgoing traffic has been drastically affected.
Due to continous rains, the highways department are unable to commence restoration works at full pace, hence have decided to pileup sand bags to avoid further damage.
Motorists are advised to travel with extreme caution as barrier walls on roads from Mettupalayam - Coonoor and various other places near Kotagiri are partially or fully damaged. Especially at the hairpin bends, buses and heavy vehicles are struggling to pass through due to the damaged roads. Warnings signs are placed with high viability to prevent accidents and warn the drivers to operate vehicles with caution.

The highway department officials have notified that thousands of sand bags other materials are stocked, as a matter of precaution.
