Coimbatore airport sees increase in passenger movement

Passenger movement at the Coimbatore International Airport in 2015 has gone up by more than 19 per cent compared to the previous calendar year.

The airport has witnessed an increase in the number of passengers in the domestic and in the international sectors, with a sharp increase in the domestic sector.

Domestic flight movement from and to the airport here in 2014 went up by 3,839 compared to the previous year and in 2015 it was up by just 1,443 as against 2014.

Yet, in terms of passenger movement, it was up by 75,939 in 2014. In 2015, there was a sharp increase by 2.47 lakh last year.

Airport Authority of India (AAI) and airline officials said that there was increase in the number of air passengers across the country.

While there was an increase by nine per cent to 10 per cent in many airports, some smaller and new airports had even recorded 25 per cent to 50 per cent increase in operations and passenger movement, last year.

Airline representatives claim that there was an increase in the number of business passengers throughout 2015. Passenger movement was at its peak during the summer and winter tourism seasons.

Statistics

Airline operators said that many from North India fly to Coimbatore and visited tourist places such as Ooty, Munnar and Kodaikanal.

Statistics from the AAI supports this.

On the international sector, increase in Silk Air’s winter schedule between Singapore and Coimbatore from four landings and take offs a week to five (November 2015 to January 31 this year) is cited as one of the important reasons for the increase in the number of international passengers.

A senior AAI official said that based on representations made by the industries in the city, an Indian airline has come forward to operate flights to Dubai.

But, date for the commencement of flights is yet to be finalised. On doing so, international passenger movement is poised to go up further in the coming financial year.

Air Carnival is expected to commence operations from Coimbatore to Chennai and rest of Tamil Nadu (via Chennai) from the end of March or early April.

A couple of domestic airlines have also expressed interest that they will connect Coimbatore with two destinations from the beginning of the financial year 2016-17.
