The reservoir, which is one of the major drinking water sources for Coimbatore, has been able to provide only a little more than what was extracted for Coimbatore so far.
According to sources, the Sadivayal Water Treatment plant inside the Siruvani Reserve is drawing only 60 Million Litres per Day (MLD) to be distributed in Coimbatore in the last few weeks. The treatment plant was drawing upto 100 MLD when the water level was high in the 878.50 meter deep reservoir.
Sources also claim that with very little rain in the summer, the water at the reservoir would be able to cater to the requirements of Coimbatore only until the end of June and if monsoon rains continue to fail at the catchment area, situations could worsen, resulting in an inevitable water shortage in Coimbatore.
Water from the reservoir is currently feeding 22 villages and upto 23 wards of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation.
