The Nilgiris: The renowned Sim's Park in Coonoor hosted the 61st annual Fruit Show on May 25 and 26, which was a two-day extravaganza for tourists, fruit-lovers and locals.

1.5 tonnes of fruits were used for decorative purposes. In order to prevent wastage after the show concluded, the Horticulture Department is making use of all the fruits to prepare fruit jam. Many fruits like jack fruit, orange, papaya, mosambi, apple, grapes, mango, banana, berry, plums, strawberry and other grains were used for creating prototypes of a butterfly, bullock cart, peacock and other creatures.

Every year, tonnes of fruits used for the fruit show are buried in the ground. This year, keeping in mind the request of the farmers of the Horticulture Department who came forward to make jam out of the used fruits, once the fruit show ended on a grand note, all fruits were removed from the prototype structures and handed over to the Horticulture Department. It is reported that the process of making jams has commenced.

The Fruit Show featured exhibits made of fruits locally produced in the villages surrounding the Nilgiris. The Pomological Station in Coonoor which is renowned for producing fruits from trees both native to this region as well as from other parts of the world also produced fruits for the show. The two-day event drew more than 60,000 visitors to the Sim's Park. As part of the spectacle, the Horticulture Department also grew over 2.6 lakh flowering plants which were in full bloom during the event.
