Coimbatore: The Assistant Town Planning Officer and another employee of the Coimbatore Corporation were arrested for receiving a bribe of Rs. 2.5 lakhs from a real estate owner for allotting house sites.

Somasundaram, a resident of R S Puram is a real estate owner. He had recently sent an application to the Coimbatore Corporation South Zone office to request permission to allot his plot in Sundarapuram for individual house sites. After considering his application, the Asst. Town Planning Officer, Saravanan reportedly demanded a bribe amount of six lakhs from Somasundaram through his office help, Anand Kumar.
Somasundaram refused to part with six lakhs and instead agreed to an amount of five lakhs, promising to first give Rs.2.5 lakhs first and the rest after obtaining the certificate for the house sites.
Meanwhile, Somasundaram registered a complaint with the Vigilance Department. He was advised to request Saravanan and Anand Kumar to appear in person at his real estate office in R S Puram and hand over chemically-treated notes amounting to Rs. 2.5 lakhs. Somasundram did as instructed and enabled the Vigilance Department police to nab Saravanan and Anand Kumar red-handed and arrest them.
Both Saravanan and Anand Kumar have been handed over to the anti-corruption court affiliated to the Coimbatore Criminal Court, in the presence of Magistrate Sthothira Mary who has ordered to keep them in remand for 15 days until June 13.
