It enters Kerala through Palakkad district, Thereon, 12 major streams join the Bhavani River. The Siruvani river a perennial stream of Palakkad district and the Kodungarapallam river, flowing from the south and southeast respectively join the Bhavani at Koodappatti on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border.The Bhavani joins the Kaveri at the Northern part of Erode City near Bhavani.
River Bhavani is mainly sourced from the Southwest monsoon and partly from the Northeast monsoon. In this scenario, various drinking water plans are drawn based on the water from River Bhavani. Almost ten such drinking water plans based on River Bhavani are afoot in Coimbatore, Mettupalayam and Tirupur. People, wildlife and mammals in the Athikadavu area rely on this river for drinking water.
Due to the severe drought of the past summer, the River Bhavani is running dry with every passing day. Owing to this, the Government has not been able to implement the devised drinking water plans for Coimbatore and Tirupur city. It is estimated that only heavy Southwest monsoon rains originating from Kerala can solve the looming water scarcity issue in parts of Tamil Nadu.
