The Nilgiris: Claiming that the forest department had not compensated them in time, family of a mother and daughter duo who where attacked by gaur, had requested the department to offer compensation as quickly as possible.

According to sources, the victims Dhanalakshmi (28) and Sruthika (13) were attached by a gaur on the 22nd of May at Thoodhoor Mattam in Coonoor.

Both were immediately rushed to the Coonoor Government hospital. While Sruthika sustained minor injuries, Dhanalakshmi’s leg was fractured in the attack.

While an interim sum of Rs. 5000 was given to Sruthika, Dhanalakshmi received no compensation so far.

This has had adverse effect on their family as the treatment expenses have gone beyond their income. In addition, their family members including Dhanalakshmi’s husband and parents are reportedly unable to go for work.

“We are in a bad crisis now and are totally relying on the compensation amount for our livelihood,” said Dhanalakshmi’s mother Sivakami.

Reacting to this, Coonoor Forest Range Officer Saravanan said that they would pay back the sum as and when it is released by authorities.

Notably, wild animal attack victims are paid a sum of a minimum of Rs. 30,000 for injuries. Fatal cases are compensated with Rs. four lakh.
