Coimbatore: The City Police on Wednesday nabbed Mahendra Varman (30) from Ulundurpettai who impersonated himself as Armaan Malik, a playback singer from Bollywood and looted several lakhs of money by blackmailing young women using their photos.
Coimbatore: The City Police on Wednesday nabbed Mahendra Varman (30) from Ulundurpettai who impersonated himself as Armaan Malik, a playback singer from Bollywood and looted several lakhs of money by blackmailing young women using their photos.
The crime came to light after a young girl from the city complained to the Police after she fell dubious on the fake account.
Mahendra Varman from Ulundurpettai has been targetting young women through social media after he started a Facebook and Twitter page in the name of the young playback singer Armaan Malik. For the past 1.5 years, he has been sending friend requests to young girls and lured them using Armaan's photos and songs.
Many women fell prey to his friend requests, as Mahendran added all of Armaan's latest programs, albums and his photos to make his fake ID look real. After women accept his friend request, Mahendran has lured them to send pictures of them in compromising positions.
Later, he used those pictures as bait and demanded large sums of money from the women. And, to those women who denied to his demands, he threatened them of uploading their pictures in YouTube.
Recently, Mahendra Varman has sent a requested to a young girl from Coimbatore. The girl fell dubious on his approach and found that he is not the real Armaan Malik. The girl decided to escalate the issue to the cyber crime department.
Inspector Yamuna Devi, Sub Inspector Arun under the supervision of DC, Balaji Saravanan decided to set a trap to nab Mahendra Varman in Coimbatore.
On behalf of the girl, they chatted with Mahendran and asked him to come to Coimbatore to receive money. Unaware of the trap, Mahendran rushed to Coimbatore from Ulundurpettai on Wednesday and got caught red-handed by the police.
The police have arrested him and are investigating.
