The event is on June 6 at 6.30 p.m at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Auditorium. Donor passes are available at IAB, That's Y Food, On The Go and Cafe Totaram, and are priced at Rs. 5000(Admit two), Rs. 3000 (Admit two) and Rs. 500 (Admit One).
The Ramayana is echoed through the DNA of India as an epic, a text, a sacred book, an opera - interpreted through painting, dance, theatre, song, animation, television and film. This epic has seen more debate, discussion and discourse than any other writing in Indian society. The heroine of this time-honoured tale Sita stands at the centre of a power struggle, as two men battle with their egos and different ideas of duty and honour. It is the woman Sita who emerges from the shadows and pages of history to braid the multiple narratives of this riveting story.
Dr. Anita Ratnam uses every weapon in her creative arsenal - voice, movement, song, dance, theatrical improvisations and storytelling to illuminate the character of Sita. Daughter of Janaka or Ravana? Princess of Mithila or Lanka? As the bride of Rama, Queen of Ayodhya, mother of Lava and Kusa she reveals her many avatars and the many lines she has to cross to become every woman and yet remain her true self. 'A Million Sitas' shows Sita as the admired, adored, pitied, invoked and worshipped one, with 'SITA' the four-letter word shadowing every Indian woman, until today. 'A Million Sitas' puts Sita in front and as the centre of the the ongoing debate for the recovery of a woman's voice.
Speaking about the fundraiser, Poonam Bafna, Chairperson of FICCI-FLO's Coimbatore Chapter said, "We are looking forward to Dr. Anita Ratnam's performance at the fundraiser and the proceeds that they raise at the event will benefit women in various sectors. We are focusing on empowering women across verticals such as Agriculture, Education and Medicine. For women entrepreneurs, they are establishing mentorship and guidance programs and other development programs. Overall, their primary focus is to empower women from grassroots to corporate levels.
Dr. Anita Ratnam served as a member of the Executive Board of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's largest apex body for the performing arts, and the ICCR, India's Government panel to select performers for international tours, a fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a voting member of the Dance Critics Association, USA. She is a visiting professor in several international universities in the USA. She is also a professional storyteller, specializing in epic stories. She served as Vice President of ABHAI from 2014 to 2018. As a cultural entrepreneur, Dr. Anita Ratnam founded Narthaki.com, the largest portal on Indian dance on the world wide web and restored the 15th-century theatre ritual performance of KAISIKA NATAKAM in her ancestral village temple of Tirukurungudi in Tamil Nadu.
