The Nilgiris: Due to heavy rains lashing Nilgiris district, a giant tree uprooted and fell on a tourist car and two-wheeler, claiming the life of a young army recruit from Coonoor.

Areas near Coonoor such as Barliyar, Kateri, Marapalam and Aruvankadu experienced heavy rains throughout yesterday. A giant tree in between Marapalam-Kateri park on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam hillside was uprooted owing to the rains and fell upon a two-wheeler that was coming from Mettupalayam to Coonoor, and also on a tourist vehicle from Jolarpettai.

Pradeep and Pradesh, 26-year old twins were travelling on the two-wheeler. Pradeep was an army recruit undergoing training at the Coimbatore Army Center. It is reported that Pradeep was stuck under the uprooted giant tree and was fighting for his life. Passers-by rescued both brothers and took them to the Coonoor Government Hospital. Unfortunately, Pradeep succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital, while Pradesh who was also severely injured is undergoing treatment.

The passengers in the tourist car escaped without any injuries. The Wellington police have filed a case regarding the accident and informed the M.R.C army camp.
