Coimbatore: With just one more day left for 'Kathiri' summer to end, heavy rains accompanied with thunderstorm lashed the City of Coimbatore including suburbs on Tuesday night, thus bringing a much needed respite.

While scattered pre-monsoon showers are reported in several parts of Kerala and interior Tamil Nadu for the past few days, yesterday's rain was the first downpour in the City signalling the onset of southwest monsoons.

Therefore, we can expect, on and off showers and thundershower activities during the upcoming days. Even though the actual monsoons are 7-10 days away, the onset of monsoon is likely to bring moderate spells over the districts of Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Pollachi and Valparai.

Last year, the monsoon arrived on 29 May and covered the country 15 days ahead of its normal course.
