Coimbatore : KPR Mills, a garment manufacturing company based in Coimbatore has set up its production facility at Makelle Industrial Park in Ethiopia. The unit at Ethiopia is the company's first facility outside India. Out of KPR's committed $15 million investment, this new facility has started operations with an initial investment of $5 million.

The export unit called KPR Export Plc started trial operations in October 2018, and the company has created 700 jobs locally, till date. The 53,300 sq.ft unit at Makelle Industrial Park has 20 garment stitching lines out of which 12 are operational now. The unit which manufactured knitted garments to start with now also has cutting, pressing and packing facilities. 12 people from Ethiopia were trained at the Coimbatore factory and the company has also sent 12 of its employees to Makelle to manage the facility.
Speaking on the expansion, Sakthivel, the Executive Director Of KPR Mills said, "This is the first production facility outside India and the Makelle unit was started to make exports to the US and Europe easier. The KPR group has a marketing office at Singapore. For the domestic market, a new brand FASO was launched recently and the company has future plans of expanding to other countries as well, after establishing operations at Ethiopia."
