Cracks on Karumathampatti Flyover; activists urge officials to check stability

Coimbatore : The residents and motorists allege that the crack in Karumathampatti bridge has widened to an alarming state leaving them in fear to use the flyover.

Social activits have urged the authorities to test the stability of the bridge and take necessary actions to avoid unforeseen events.

A six-lane road was built from Tiruppur district to Walayar, Kerala border at a budget of Rs.850 crores.

Since 2012, the six-lane road has been opened for traffic. Flyovers have been built at intersection points on the six-lane for ease of transport and connectivity. Public transport buses, trucks and other forms of heavy vehicles from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra pass through these lanes.

Recently, a crack was noted on the flyover that passes through Karumathampatti. Though the highway workers are in the process to fix it, the motorists have expressed fear to travel on the flyover.

A social worker from that area said "The six-lane road through Karumathampatti is the narrow one and the side walls of the bridge are cracked. With monsoons nearing, the cracks could get widened anytime allowing the flyover to collapse. To avoid such mishaps, the highway authorities should take necessary steps on priority."

"Failing to do so, we will stage a road roko", apprised the resident.

When questioned about this to the Project Director of Highways, he denied the accusations and noted that the bridge is in excellent condition.

"However, necessary measures are being taken taken to ensure the stability of the bridge. The residents need not panic", he added.
