The 61st Fruit Show in Coonoor Sims Park marked the closure of the annual summer festival of the Nilgiris. The fruit Show began on Saturday at 10 am posing an entrance arch of 12 ft made up of 'uncut' fruits like Jack fruit, Pomelo, Orange, Banana, Lemon, Pineapple.
Income Tax officer of the Nilgiris district, Selvaraj inaugurated the 61st fruit show which was themed to create awareness among people the hardship of farmers in cultivating fruits.
The Visitors to the fruit show lauded the horticulture department for implementing a “zero fruit wastage” show for the first time.
Until last year, tonnes of fruits would be carved or cut and used for decorative purposes, which later would be discarded. However, this year to avoid wastage whole fruits were used for decorations, so that they could be reused.
The prototypes of butterfly, bullock cart, peacocks and other structures were created using 1.5 tonnes of oranges, grapes, pineapples and jackfruits, all uncut. A selfie spot for the tourists also created in the park.
Fruit jams made out of seasonal fruits of the Nilgiris district like plum, peach, chickoo and hill vegetables like carrot, beans, potato, turnip, cabbage were on display. The 37 kg Jackfruit from Kinakoranai amused the spectators.
Mangoes from Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, lemon and gooseberry from Thirunelveli, Banana, .ango and Jack fruit from Kanyakumari, Guava varieties from Pudukottai, pomegranate from Erode, Watermelons from Villupuram, Chickoo, Pomegranate, Goose berry from Coimbatore and many other fruits from different places in the State were kept for display.
Different game shows kept the kids entertained. On the last day of the Fruit show prizes were distributed to the participants.
Officials including RTO, Ranjith Singh, Assistant Director of Horticulture, Siva Subramaniam, Assistant Director of Horticulture, Manager of Sims Park, Gopal were present.
