Coimbatore: In an attempt to develop food, nest and perch for birds, an awareness programme titled ‘Trees for Birds’ was conducted at Kongunadu Arts and Science College, here on Saturday.
Talking at the event, M. Gunasekaran Ecologist from the S.S. Research Foundation in Kallidaikurichi threw light on the importance of birds and trees.
He explained how their lives are interrelated and also spoke intensely on birds, their classification based on habitat and habits, their contribution in seed dispersal and nectaring, importance of native tress and planting the appropriate saplings suitable for respective areas.
A project aimed at increasing the tree cover in the urban areas of Coimbatore City was proposed to be launched at a later schedule. The project, which would increase the bird population according to the organisers, would be headed by K. Jagannathan of Vaanam Foundation.
It is expected to be launched by the 5th of June this year and is to be partnered by representatives from various NGOs from the city.
S.Raja from the Eco Club of Kongunadu Arts and Science College, K. Raman, Founder of RAK India Foundation, P. Mohanprasath, Founder of Aeon Charitable Trust and S. Sivaraja from the Chinnavedapatti lake Restoration Movement would be the coordinators of the project. The consultants of the project would be ecologist Gunasekaran and Ramsundar.
The event was also attended by students and staff representatives from various institutions.
