Kallar Government Fruit Farm enjoys a plentiful jackfruit season

Coimbatore: The Kallar Government Fruit Farm which was established by the Britishers in the year 1900 is located at Kallar, near Mettupalayam in a serene environment.

Coimbatore: The Kallar Government Fruit Farm which was established by the Britishers in the year 1900 is located at Kallar, near Mettupalayam in a serene environment.



Rainfall here is recorded at about 130 to 140 cms, thus allowing the cultivation of a variety of fruits like jackfruit, lemon, mango, guava, mangosteen, litchi, durian, rambutan and other rare foreign fruits.



Seasonal fruits cultivated here are plucked and sold directly in the market to locals and tourists. With April and May being the season for jackfruits, about 50 varieties of jackfruit trees on this farm are flourishing now. The most cultivated variety are the Veli Jackfruit, Singapore Jackfruit, Barliyar Jackfruit and the Kallar Jackfruit. They are sold at a rate of Rs.10 per kg to tourists and others. The Kallar Jackfruit is known and preferred the most for its succulence.
