Coimbatore : As a part of Tamil Nadu United Sanitation Support programme (TNUSSP), a summer camp was organised to create awareness about the importance of 'Water, Sanitation and Hygiene' (WASH) to the children at Narasimannaickempalayam on May 15.
Coimbatore : As a part of Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Support programme (TNUSSP), a summer camp was organised to create awareness about the importance of 'Water, Sanitation and Hygiene' (WASH) to the children at Narasimannaickempalayam on May 15.
Around 20 children took part in the three-day summer camp comprised of orientation sessions, fun-filled games with the concept of daily-household water management techniques and clean habits, one needs to follow on the usage of water.
Sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the project was organised by Keystone foundation an NGO based at Kothagiri. The foundation's Urban technical support unit coordinated the summer camp.
Discourses were given to the children on general importance of water, cleanliness, social awareness, hygiene and judicial use of water and minimized wastage.
A song was composed on the importance of cleanliness and water usage, kids danced to the tune choreographed by the team members. On the final day, children will give a presentation on what they learnt from the camp, a small drama and dance performance. Certificates and gifts will be awarded to every participant.
Vinitha Murugesan, Coordinator from Keystone Urban Control Unit said, "Basically, we work with schools to sensitize about water sanitation. WASH is a camp curated for school children. For a change, we planned a summer camp, as TNUSSP already circled Narasimanaickenpalayam, as one of the areas to concentrate on, hence the summer camp was planned here."
She also opined that "Creating awareness using kids will be very effective. They spread the message to their parents and neighbourhood and ensure its implemented".
Vijaya Rajeshwari, a 13-year-old participant said, "I have taken part in various summer camps. Taking part in 'WASH' has given a whole new experience. I've learnt very valuable lessons and eager to practice and preach it."
"I've planned to segregate wastes at my home and educate my parents on the various techniques to use water judiciously", avowed Rajeshwari.
