"Residential area or dump yard?", ask residents of Keeranatham

Coimbatore : Garbage menace is a ubiquitous problem in the City. There is no ward that doesn't face the issue of uncleared garbage. Though tackling waste management is a huge challenge faced by all corporations across the country, the City dwellers in most parts fear their wards transforming into dump yard.

One such area is the frontage of CHIL-SEZ Keeranatham, here. Over the years, Keeranatham has transformed into a IT Hub and thousands of employees from the city and neighbouring districts work at the IT companies located there.

Amidst these tall-standing plush IT buildings, there is this disturbing scene of mounds of uncleared garbage dumped into a canal that leads to a nearby water body.

Presently, the canal resembles a low-lying dumpyard. As improper practices of dumping wastes in open spaces and leaving them uncleared leads to the spread of diseases, the residents are irked over the authorities callousness in clearing the dump.

"We have escalated the issue several times to City Corporation but no action was taken citing that Keeranatham doesn't come under the City Corporation limits. Everyday the garbage mount is rising and people have begun dumping wastes of all kind into that canal. The canal is clogged 100 percent", alleged a resident.

He also noted that for more than 500 meters, the canal is completely clogged with wastes."With monsoons approaching soon, the clogged garbage could decompose and create more health hazards. Uncleared waste pose a serious health hazard and lead to the spread of infectious diseases and attracts flies, rats, and disease-spreading germs", lament people.

"If not Corporation, whom should we escalate the issue? Or should we wait till the local body election to complaint to our Councillor?", question the residents and passers-by.
