CCMC has taken up rejuvenation of eight lakes including Vaalankulam, Periakulam, Selvasinthamani lake, and Singanallur lake under the Smart Cities programme.The project aims at rejuvenating the eight lakes under the Corporation’s maintenance and setting up parks and walking tracks around the lake for public use.
In the first phase, three lakes Valankulam, Periakulam and Selvasinthamani lake have been ear-marked for rejuvenation and restoration at a cost of Rs.152 crores. This includes strengthening of bunds, setting up sewage treatment plants and waste water management systems.
With beautification of the lakes happening on the other side, CCMC is also focussing on strengthening the bunds, replacing hydraulic structures, if required including sluice gates.
Commenting of this, a senior corporation official said, "CCMC has taken up eight lakes for a 99 year lease but the lakes belong to PWD. As they have more expertise in technical matters, CCMC has sought the help of PWD to assist in restructuring the water bodies."
He also added that "Hydraulic structures will be checked and replaced based on PWD's recommendation. PWD will advice on how far and deep desilting can be carried out, strengthening the bunds etc."
"CCMC will follow their recommendations to rejuvenate all of these eight lakes in a phased manner starting with Ukkadam Periakulam and Selvachinthamani and Valankulam", apprised the Senior Corporation Official.
