Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) gathered on Monday at the District Collectorate to send a postal petition to the Tamil Nadu Governor seeking release of the seven convicts who were proven guilty in the former PM Rajiv Gandhi assasination case.

Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) gathered on Monday at the District Collectorate to send a postal petition to the Tamil Nadu Governor seeking release of the seven convicts who were proven guilty in the former PM Rajiv Gandhi assasination case.

The DYFI in their petition stated that under section 161, the Tamil Nadu Governor should consider the plea and release the convicts who have already served 28 years in prison.

On September 9 last, the Tamil Nadu Cabinet recommended the release of the convicts. The issue of their release was pending before the Governor and he had till date refrained from taking a call because of the pendency of the victims' petition in the apex court.

Now, that the Apex Court has disposed the case and recommended that the governor take a call. Several political parties and organisations have demanded the release of the convicts.

The convicts have served 28 years in jail. Their death penalty was commuted by the apex court to life sentence. The 1991 blast claimed 16 lives and left many with grievous injuries.
