Addressing the press at the Coimbatore Railway Station's VIP Lounge on Saturday, the SP said that “Stringent action will be taken to deter the chain snatchers in trains. In the recent time, chain snatching incidents have increased, 12 such incidents have been reported in Salem and Erode junctions in which 53 sovereign of gold ornaments were robbed. Criminals involved in such crimes will be dealt seriously and will be booked under Goondas act."
He also added that the special team formed to nab the criminals have arrested the gang on Friday. The gang members are from the same family and hail from Kolapur in Maharashtra. The gang will be booked under Goondas act.
Upon inquiry, the police have learnt that the gang have been targetting women standing on foot board or seated near the windows. While the train is about to pick up speed, the gang plunder the ornaments and escape.
The railway police have requested the women to be watchful while traveling and alert the police at this number during such incidents 99625 - 00500.
