Coimbatore : Heavy rains with gusty winds lashed Mettupalayam and surrounding areas on Friday causing wide-spread damage to over 2 lakh of banana plantation and houses. The devastation has left the farmers in despair.
Acres of banana plantations in Sirumugai, Pallapalayam, Pagathur and the surrounding areas of Mettupalayam taluks are reported to have been damaged in the rains on Friday.
Partial and complete destruction of around two lakh banana plantation in Pallapalayam, Aanaipallipudur, Sennambalayam villages has left the farmers incur heavy losses.
"Over the week, 30 lakh banana plantation have been devasted due to strong winds and rains. It costs around Rs. 200 -250 for the farmer to plant each tree. As most of the trees were ready for harvest, the unexpected devastation has caused us huge losses", stated a farmer from Sirumugai
He also noted that the government has to fix a fair price as compensation. "Last week, the government announced to compensate Rs. 5 per banana plant, which is an insult to the farmers", he lamented.
