Makkal Needhi Maiam petitions EC to cancel Sulur by-poll

Irked by the decision, the party cadres had expressed their disapproval and alleged that their leader's visit was banned on purpose.

Coimbatore : In a major twist, Makkal Needhi Maiam's General Secretary, A. Arunachalam has petitioned to the Chief Election Commissioner to cancel the Sulur by-polls scheduled on May 19, Sunday.

A detailed mail has been sent to the EC and a copy of the same to Satyabrata Sahoo, Tamil Nadu Chief electoral officer.

The action comes after the district election officer and Superintendent of Police denied permission for MNM President Kamal Haasan's campaign in Sulur on Friday. Citing security reasons, the actor-politician was denied permission on the last day of campaign.

Irked by the decision, the party cadres had expressed their disapproval and alleged that their leader's visit was banned on purpose.

Though the  party had submitted the letter of approval for Kamal's visit on Fridayto Sulur, the officials did not approve it. However, oral approval was granted for his campaign on Friday, say the party heads.

The party  has now approached that EC to call off the election in Sulur on My 19, citing that under frivolous  grounds, that too after an inordinate delay clearly actions are designed to impair free and fair elections in the state'. Hence, requested the EC to call off the by poll in sulur constituency.
