The Sulur campaign reached a crescendo in its last lap after top leaders like MK Stalin and CM Edapadi Palanisamy addressed a huge gathering for the third time in the constituency. However, Makkal Needhi Maiam's President Kamal Haasan who was supposed to campaign today at Sulur was denied permission citing security reasons.
The 17th parliament election is conducted in seven phases across the nation and now it has reached the final stage. In Tamil Nadu, out of the 22 vacant assembly constituencies, by-polls were held for 18 assembly constituencies along with the parliament election on April 18. The by-polls for the remaining constituencies-- Sulur, Ottapidaram, Thirupparankundram and Aravakurichi will be held on May 19.
Today being the last day for the campaign, Sulur constituency wore a festive look, as cadres of all major political parties including AIADMK, DMK, MNM, AMMK and NTK were seen vigorously campaigning and holding road shows to garner votes by playing drums and party anthems. The candidates also toured in their convoys and appealed to the public to vote.
Pongalur Palanisamy, candidate of Secular Progressive Alliance was seen campaigning in an open Jeep followed by 300 plus cadres who rallied behind him in their two-wheelers.
The two-wheeler campaign that started at Irugur went through Chindamanipudur, Pallapalayam, Kannampalayam, Ravathur, Rasipalayam, Madhapur, Ramachipalayam, Somanur, Samalapuram, Sengathurai, Kadampadi, Kangeyampalayam and reached Sulur by 5 pm.
In a similar style, Makkal Needhi Maiam's candidate G. Mayilsami also toured through the constituency accompanied by hundreds of party cadres in two-wheelers. Their rally started at 4 pm from Paapampatti Pirivu here.
The campaigning ended on Friday 6 pm, as the 48-hour silence period will continue till 6 p.m. on Sunday.
