Coimbatore : The DMK's party speaker, Salem Govindan is in the spotlight for trying out a new campaign style by donning the role of a soothsayer during his campaign in Sulur.
Salem Govindan campaigns by beating aloud a tambourine and requesting the public to vote for the DMK saying, “Jakkamma says… Jakkamma says… For the country to be good, for good projects to reach people, vote for DMK.” People seeing Salem Govindan for the first time have mistaken him for a real soothsayer.

Salem Govindan candidly opened up about his unique way of campaigning, saying, "We were unable to gauge the mentality of the public by campaigning from propaganda vehicles. I did one campaign by beating a tambourine in R.K.Nagar constituency for the first time, which gave me a good experience. Hence, I am following the same method in the four constituencies where the by-elections are to be held. I have finished campaigning in Ottapidaram and Thiruparankundram and now i am Sulur. I can clearly see that only DMK is there in people’s minds. The AIADMK party workers are creating problems in a few places since I am campaigning using the name of Jakkamma. Beating a tambourine is my community job. If the AIADMK files a case tomorrow on me for beating a tambourine, I can face that legally, because this is my community way of doing things. I am acting like a soothsayer because of my respect for DMK. This is needed for Stalin to become Chief Minister," he added.
