The Nilgiris : Tea estate workers and the villagers of Alakkarai near Coonoor became tense after they spotted a sloth bear carrying a cub near a private tea estate on Saturday noon.
The mother and cub were freely roaming in a private tea estate and nearby farmland in Alakkarai village near Coonoor. The tea estate workers panicked when they saw the mother bear ferocious and attempting to attack passers-by.
The tea estate workers have requested forest officials to chase the bear away or capture it, since they were unable to work in the estate. "Due to the prevailing jack fruit season and other seasonal fruits, animals like the sloth bear venture into farmlands in search of food. As the sloth bear is seen along with the cub, the animal could attack people to protect its cub," said a tea estate worker from Alakkarai.
