The Nilgiris: The 102nd birth anniversary of the founder of Nilgiris Adivasi Welfare Association, Dr. S Narasimhan was celebrated today at the ‘NAWA' office premises.

An exhibition of handcrafts, photos, traditional herbal medicines and ‘child line’ awareness stalls are also part of the birth anniversary celebrations clubbed with the summer festival that is on at Ooty. Model ‘kudil’ and dance postures of the tribals also attracted tourists in the vicinity.

Speaking on this, the administrators said, "Many handcrafts were placed for display in the exhibition which have largely attracted tourists. The photos that have captured the lifestyle of the tribals are a hit among students. This exhibition will be open till May 27." The Secretary of NAWA, Aalvaas, Treasurer Shanmugam, Kotagiri Inspector Velmurugan and many other dignitaries participated in the event.

The Nilgiris Adivasi Welfare Association (NAWA) is a secular, charitable non-government organization founded by the late Padmashri Dr. S Narasimhan and registered in 1958 following many years of lonely pioneering work in 1940. He established Medical Centers in Kolikarai and Aryure Tribal villages, initially. Recognizing his noble work, former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru presented a jeep to Dr. Narasimhan in 1952.

Dr. Narasimhan was awarded the Padmashri by the Government of India and the Dr. B.C. Roy Award by the Medical Council of India to recognize his noble work for the welfare of Nilgiri tribal communities. In 1966, Miss Victoria Armstrong (Inspector of School in England) inspired by Dr. Narasimhan’s work joined Nilgiris Adivasi Welfare Association as a voluntary worker. She became the Honorary Treasurer of NAWA and under her leadership the work of NAWA expanded to cover more villages with many new programs.
