Coimbatore: The Government Rose Garden in Ooty wears a fragrant festive look every summer and this year is no different. 40,000 rose plants of 4,200 varieties are on display at the Rose Garden.

The Government Rose Garden is situated on the slopes of the Elk Hill in Vijayanagaram in Ooty town across a sprawling 4.40 hectares. At the entrance of the Rose Garden, the rose sapling planted by the late former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa beckons the visitor. The Rose Garden has even been christened as the Jayalalithaa Rose Garden, the Nootrandu Roja Poonga and the Centenary Rose Park.

The mesmerising view of the lush green gardens with areas dedicated to captivatingly fragrant roses is a sight to remember. The flowers add more than just colour and attract visitors from all age groups, especially those who are interested in the study of Botany.

The beautifully landscaped garden was established in 1995 to commemorate the Centenary Flower Show. The garden is also known to be one of the most famous botanical gardens maintained by the Horticulture Department of Tamil Nadu. The peak flowering season in this Garden is in summer (March to June). The rose plants that have been imported from foreign countries are also on display.

The World Rose Federation had presented the award for the best rose garden in India in 2006. The heritage garden and table roses also grace the flower beds at the Government Rose Garden. Tourists are seen trying to capture the beauty of these rose varieties on their mobile phones, realising that it does not do much justice to the beauty on display.
