42-year old brain dead man's family donate his organs at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital

Coimbatore: The family of a 42-year old man from Coimbatore decided to donate his organs at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, after he was declared brain dead due to a traumatic brain injury after being involved in a road accident.

Coimbatore: The family of a 42-year old man from Coimbatore decided to donate his organs at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, after he was declared brain dead due to a traumatic brain injury after being involved in a road accident. 

 

Sivaprakasam sustained a severe brain injury following a road accident when walking to Palani temple on April 20. Neurosurgeons and the critical care team of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore toiled to try and save his life. However, due to the severe nature of the brain injury, Sivaprakasam was declared brain dead and a series of tests called 'apnoea tests' were performed by experts in the field confirming that he was brain dead.

When informed of the irreversible nature of brain death and the possibility of organ donation, Sivaprakasam's family came forward to donate his organs to save the lives of several other people. They donated his liver, kidneys and eyes. After mandatory legal permission was obtained for organ donation from the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN),

Sivaprakasam underwent multi-organ retrieval. His liver was transplanted to a patient with liver failure at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital. One of his kidneys was transplanted to a patient at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, while the other kidney and his eyes were allocated to other hospitals in Coimbatore.
