Madurai : In an breakthrough direction, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has ordered the Collectors of all the Districts in Tamil Nadu to procure earth movers and use them for desiltung water bodies.
The court further advised the district administrations here to follow Sivagangai District, which had procured earth movers for desilting water bodies and clearing encroachments.
The order came after an activist named K.K. Ramesh filed a PIL in the court towards the conservation of water bodies.
In the petition, Ramesh had stated that the water bodies in the State were filled with encroachment resulting in unnecessary blockage of water.
“These encroachments are here for more than 50 years and have not been cleared. This has led to the depletion of ground water table and would further lead to water scarcity in the coming years,” he said.
Claiming that the State has not taken any concrete step in water body conservation despite various requests, the petitioner had sought actions against the State.
