Coimbatore: In an attempt to strengthen their number and keep a strong hold on the Assembly, the AIADMK-run State Government is likely to disqualify 5 MLAs who are supporting TTV Dhinakaran, the General Secretary of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam. The MLAs include A Prabhu (Kallakurichi), E Rathinasabapathy (Aranthangi) and V T Kalaiselvan (Vriddhachalam) who had pledged their allegiance to Dhinakaran.
While a response was sought from them by the AIADMK last year, their response is hitherto unknown. However, it is learned that they did not offer to return to the AIADMK-led party headed by Chief Minister Edapaddi K Palaniswamy and Deputy CM, O Paneerselvam.
If the disqualification of the MLAs is done today by the Speaker under the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 1986, it is expected to give a cutting edge to the ruling AIADMK, which is sitting on a wafer-thin majority of 113 seats, since the strength of the Assembly would come down by five. It is also expected to help the ruling party, even if they lose the majority of the seats in the polls that was held earlier this month.
