The Nilgiris : The lorry owners in the Nilgiris have decided to go on a strike condemning changing of Coonoor-Mettupalayam road, as one-way and imposing timing restrictions.

The lorry owners on Thursday jointly filed a petition to the District Collector, J. Innocent Divya highlighting the issues, after implementation of one-way traffic diversion.

"Owing to summer rush, the district administration has announced that all vehicles from Ooty to MTP have to use the Kotagiri road and all vehicles to Ooty will have to use the MTP - Coonoor route. Along with these, traffic diversions for lorries have also been announced. Lorries and heavy weight vehicles are allowed to carry goods only between 9 pm to 6 am. Due to the restrictions, lorries are unable to supply goods ontime at their respective destinations, leading to severe economical losses", noted a lorry owner from Mettupalayam.

"During the daytime, the lorries are parked at the foothills near Mettupalayam and begin their journey only after 9 am which is completely unproductive. Lorries which can do two-trips per day are unable to do so, due to the timing restriction", alleged a lorry owner in Kotagiri.

In their petition, they have requested the district adminsitration to reschedule the timing and warned that they will go on a strike, if their demands are not met.
