The model code of conduct was implemented on March 10, following the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections. In Coimbatore district, a total of 80 election flying squad teams comprising of 20 video teams, 30 check post teams and 30 flying squad teams were formed. Though the Lok Sabha elections drew to a close on April 18, the by-election date for Sulur constituency was announced as May 19. Since both the Lok Sabha election and by-election results for the legislative assembly elections are to be released on May 23, officials have said that the model code of conduct will be in effect till election results are announced.
Speaking on this, an official said, "As by-election for Sulur legislative assembly is about to be conducted, the flying squad will not only be involved in checking of this constituency alone, they will also conduct checking across the entire district. Rs. 13 crores had been seized till date in Coimbatore, and Rs. 3 crore returned after submitting appropriate documents."
