Coimbatore: The Chennai Meteorological Department has announced that the low pressure formed currently between the Indian Ocean and the South-east coast of Bay of Bengal will become a depression and get stronger in the next 36 hours.

It is expected that the depression will convert itself into the 'FANI' cyclone and move toward the Northeast direction which will probably cross the shores on April 30. The coastal districts of Tamil Nadu is expected to receive rainfall on account of this.
Professor Ramanathan, the Head of Meteorological Centre in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University spoke about the effect that FANI could have. “The possible effect of FANI cyclone in Coimbatore region will be less, but the amount of rainfall will increase.
Usually, there will be 137 mm rainfall approximately in Coimbatore district in the months of March, April and May every year, but this year, 18.2 mm rainfall which was supposed to be received during the month of March was not received. 23.6 mm rainfall was recorded in the last four days in April, with 19.4 mm rainfall being recorded on April 23. There is a possibility of 10 mm rainfall in the next 2-3 days. The amount of rainfall might increase due to FANI cyclone. 50 mm rainfall is expected in the month of May.
Usually, Agni Nakshatram will be from May 4-28. Last year, the rainfall was such that the heat of Agni Nakshatram was not felt. But this year due to less rainfall, the impact of Agni Nakshatram will be average,” he added.
