Farmers are cultivating small onions at on a large scale in the Tirupur belt, including Gundadam, Koduvai, Darapuram, Kudimangalam and Kangeyam areas. The small onion which were cultivated since January are now being harvested. Farmers spend Rs.30,000-Rs.40000 per acre to manufacture onions, but due to the decline in price, they had to incur loss. Hence, they had stored the harvested small onions and started selling them for a manageable rate. The onions which were purchased for Rs.12 last month are now being purchased at Rs.30-35 by traders.

Farmers have requested authorities to create a storage warehouse for small onions in Gundadam area, to store the surplus production and sell it during the shortage seasons, so that there will be a standard price and farmers will not incur loss.
