Coimbatore : Ahead of the Sulur by-election, a meeting of DMK functionaries was held in the city. Ex-minister A V Velu who is in-charge of the Sulur legislative assembly by-election headed the DMK functionaries meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, A V Velu said, "If we win, it will be dedicated to the Panchayat Secretaries and Ward Secretaries who work hard for our victory. We are here only to serve the public effectively. Pongalur Palanisamy who has been announced as the Sulur assembly constituency candidate has held many positions and was victorious since his school days. Only winning the election should be our target and more than 10,000 members should attend the meeting to be held on the eve of April 28."

He added, "The first meeting should be in such a grand manner that it ensures the failure of the rival. Sulur should be separated into 41 parts in which all of us will be functionaries. All the 41 functionaries should work efficiently and winning the election should be the target. Youth wing, Women’s wing and Student’s wing will carry out their work independently. In a research conducted in the Kongu region which tried to ascertain the reasons for our defeat in the elections, we came to know that only 15 percent of the Arunthathiyar community coted for DMK in the last elections, due to which we garnered less votes in all 43 constituencies. The Arunthathiyar people have benefited from many welfare schemes only due to late former DMK Chief Karunanidhi's efforts and now DMK will work effectively to improve their living standard. Even in the Arunthathiyar meeting, it was mentioned that a 'Mani Mandapam' will be built for Pollan who was the war commander for Theeran Chinnamalai. This will happen when DMK comes to power. This should be taken to people the during campaign which will ensure our victory in the Kongu belt election.

Earlier, addressing the gathering of the functionaries ahead of the Sulur by-election, Pongalur Palanisamy said, "I was the district in-charge for 22 years and I maintain a healthy relationship with everyone. Starting as a party cadre, I held various positions in the party including MLA, District Secretary and Minister." He added, "Ministers in Kongu belt have made crores through corruption. The DMK Chief, Stalin has chosen me only to put an end to their atrocities. DMK will emerge victorious in all the constituencies in Kongu belt since people here wish for change. Grama Sabha meetings conducted by DMK Chief Stalin is a hit among people. I could literally see the rage of people against the AIADMK party in the Grama Sabha meetings," opined Pongalur Palanisamy.
