Coimbatore : Just over a month after the capture of elephant Vinayakan from the Thadagam region, the second problem elephant Chinnathambi is soon to be captured and translocated as one more Kumki elephant has been transported to Coimbatore from Mudumalai.
Around evening today, the Kumki elephant named Mudumalai (55) was transported from the Theppakadu kumki elephant camp and would be reaching one of the Kumki camps here. There are two kumki camps in Coimbatore with one permanent camp at Sadivayal where Bomman and John are stationed. The other camp is at Thadagam, where Vijay and Cheran are stationed.
Once the Kumki arrives, it would be rested for a day and then used for the capturing operation, which could begin in two days. Just like Vinayakan’s capture, four kumki elephants are to be taken to the spot and used depending on the situation.
According to sources, forest personnel are currently monitoring the movements of Chinnathambi, who is said to be roaming between Coimbatore and Periyanaickenpalayam Ranges.
After the capture of Vinayakan, it was expected that Chinnathambi could be captured within a few weeks. However, the capture was delayed and farmers of the Thadagam valley started revolting again and planned for a protest last week.
However, it was called off once officials with the forest department had assured them that proper steps would be taken to capture Chinnathambi. Subsequently, the capture process is being carried out swiftly by foresters.
