Coimbatore : The textile city of Coimbatore, which is surrounded by more than half by forests, is all set to welcome Jadav Payeng, dubbed as the forest man of India for this 36-year-long effort in converting a sand bar into a forest in the middle of the mighty Brahmaputra.

Jadav Payeng, who is to land in the city tomorrow is visiting the Singanallur Lake, where he would be inaugurating ‘Jadava Aaranya’, an urban forest patch, named after him.

The forest patch was created using miyawaki method at the lake by volunteers with collaborative efforts from members of the Centre for Urban Biodiversity Conservation and Education (CUBE), Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) and Indian Oil Corporation.

The land that currently hosts the miyawaki forest patch was filled with debris waste which some years ago was successfully converted into a green patch by continuous efforts. Thousands of liquor bottles and plastic waste were also removed from the area.

The organisers said that it would be fitting that Payeng inaugurates such a first of its kind urban forest in Coimbatore, as he has successfully implemented the project at a larger scale in Assam.

Notably, Payeng is known around the globe for converting a 1360 acre barren sand bar into a thick forest after planting a tree-a-day for almost 36 years while he worked on a greening project there.

His efforts came to light in 2012 and he was subsequently awarded the Padma Shri. Tomorrow at the lake, he would be interacting with students and also share his experience.
