Nilgiris : In an attempt to curb any fire accidents inside the forests, the Nilgiris Forest Division has posted 300 temporary fire fighters here.
Briefing media persons here, District Forest Officer (Nilgiris Division) Sumesh Soman said that a special monitoring station has been set up at Kolareibetta hills and two staff have been posted there.
“The station is rigged with wireless phones so that the staff can be contacted at any time. From the station, they will have a better view of places including Pykara, Naduvattam, Kundha, Korakundha and Avalanche. Any smoke or fire sighted by the staff would be immediately reported to the persons at the field,” he said.
He added that the decision has been made following a severe winter which had withered most of the vegetation inside the forest in all the 13 ranges in the division.
“There are high chances that they could catch fire and it is imperative that we stay on alert,” informed Sumesh Soman.
