Coimbatore : Dairy farmers of Mettupalayam staged a protest along with their family members demanding hike in procurement price of milk and refrain buying milk from Karnataka.
Hundreds of dairy farmers took part in the demonstration conducted by Tamil Nadu Farmers Association and Vivasaya Ilaignargal Amaippu at Thayanur near Mettupalayam on Wednesday.
During the demonstration, they raised slogans on various demands including to increase the procurement price to Rs. 40 per litre. They also cited that procurement prices in Kerala varies accordingly to the production cost. Hence, TN government should adopt similar policies, they urged.
"Recently, many farmers who were practicing agriculture have shifted to dairy farming as they are unable to sustain the losses in agriculture. While, the fodder for milking cows have increased multifold, the procurement price remains unaltered", noted the dairy farmers.
"If the state government delay to fulfill our demands, we have planned to stage ‘Kanji thotti’ protest and a series of other novel protests in the upcoming days’ they vowed during the protest.
