Coimbatore: As part of the Swach Bharat, around 500 twin bins have been placed by the Coimbatore Corporation at major commercial hubs. The purpose of twin bins is to collect dry and wet waste separately. Each set of twin bin costs around Rs.8500.

The aim of installing these bins is to stop people from littering the streets and to create awareness about segregating dry and wet waste at the source. This will also encourage shopkeepers to segregate waste and dispose it at their doorstep. According to a senior official, "Around 100 tonnes of waste is generated from the commercial centres in the city. Waste segregation becomes a huge task at these points. So, instead of huge garbage bins, CCMC will replace them with twin bins in a phased manner.

Initially these bins will be placed at Oppanakkara street, R.S. Puram, Gandhipuram, Cross Cut Road , NSR Road and Big Bazaar Street. Later, this will be extended to other main roads as well," added the official.
