Coimbatore: Two men died of asphyxia on Tuesday while cleaning a septic tank at a housing unit in Singanallur.
Coimbatore: Two men died of asphyxia on Tuesday while cleaning a septic tank at a housing unit in Singanallur.
According to initial reports, Murugan and Pandidurai of Namasivaya Colony in Uppilipalayam are engaged in cleaning septic tanks. Today evening, they descended into a septic tank of a housing situated in Singanallur. As the duo did not wear mask or other safety equipments, they both inhaled methane gas collected in the tank. Both were reported dead on the spot.
It is to be noted that the victims are not permanent or contractual workers of Coimbatore Corporation. They are private workers engaged in cleaning septic tanks across the city. Following the incident, the public have urged CCMC to keep a vigil on such private workers, if they carry enough safety measures while cleaning septic tanks.
