The Kothar tribe are an ethnic group who are indigenous to the Nilgiris mountain range. The State government have extended several welfare schemes for the upliftment of the tribal group. In a initiative to ensure self employment and assured income for the tribal people, the state government alloted 5 acres of land for the Kothar tribes.
Meanwhile, the forest department arrested a man named Shanavas of Kothar tribe on Tuesday who was caught red-handed for farming in the land belonging to the forest department. Based on the complaints that people of the tribe have been misusing forest lands for agriculture, the officials today visited the spot and arrested him.
Headed by the President of the tribal community, Sarawathi, the tribals laid seige to the forest department demanding release of Shanavas. They alleged that the forest department has made false claims for arresting him.
