Coimbatore : The Anganwadis which function under the Social Welfare Department and the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) have been extending holistic nutrition for pregnant women and young children below the age of five, thus leading the way in aiding the physical and mental growth of children during the early development stage.

While pre-schooling is extended to children from the age of two up to five years, supplementary nutrition is given to children in the age group of 6 to 36 months, through these centers. Under the schemes, children under five years of age are being targeted to prevent under-nutrition, stunting and low weight anomalies.

As part of the Anganwadi schemes, children are fed with nutritious food such as groundnut cakes, pulses and eggs to ensure the overall nutrition of the children below five. The mothers are given counseling when children are found to be below normal weight ranges. Adolescent girls in the age category of 11 to 14 are given supplementary nutrition, while those in the age category of 14 to 18 years are given lessons in personality development, home science and leadership. The convergence of various schemes such as ICDS are incorporated into the scheme to ensure the overall health of the children, adolescents and mothers.

Abhirami, a mother and a beneficiary living in Tyagi Kumaran Street near Town Hall opines, "I have learned a lot about the early development of children and the need for maintaining good nutrition for children under the age of 6 , and have had lessons in effective mothering skills. My son who has been admitted in the Anganwadi center near Selvarpuram, has benefited a lot by pre-schooling and nutritional supplements given in the center. He has learned socializing skills and is keeping good health. I am duty bound to thank the Government which has been looking after our young children for optimum mental and physical growth, during their growing years,” added the grateful Abhirami.
