The Nilgiris : The public have urged desilting work to be done in the Kodappamund channel of Nilgiris, since the channel is choked with plastic wastes and stagnation of sewage released by residents.
The Kodappamund channel which runs through major parts of Ooty culminates in the Ooty Boat House lake. Since the 4 km-long channel passes through residential areas, household wastes are disposed into the channel, with sewage being released from houses, cottages and lodges which further stagnates the channel.
Following this, the State government had allocated several crores to carry out desilting of the channel. Private contractors who had undertaken the desilting work carried it out in a slipshod manner, with plastic wastes still seen mounted up in the channel. During rainy seasons, since water is unable to flow through the channel freely, the water enters nearby homes, also stagnating the roads.
Hence, the public have urged the district administration to carry out desilting of the channel as early as possible, before the commencement of the summer tourist season.
